Afghan Refugee Support

February 19, 2022

After a holiday break, we returned to the Afghan Youth Relief Foundation to bring much needed attention to organizing their donations. In addition to GUSVA members – we were joined by students from Campus Ministry and the McDonough School of Business’ volunteer student organization. We had over 20 volunteers! Check back with us for our March service projects!

Unfortunately, the volunteer event for today was cancelled due to a terrorist threat in the Springfield, VA area.

You can still find ways you can help – If you’re looking for something to do on the weekend, you can check out the Afghan Youth Relief Foundation’s Linktree.

This week we’ve been helping sort and organize donations at VFW Post 9274. We appreciate those volunteers who joined us.

However, the VFW (as well as other nonprofits in the DMV) has stopped receiving donations because the Dulles Expo is no longer accepting these donations.

We have shifted our attention to to providing support to Lawful Permit Residents (LPRs). LPRs are Afghan people who arrived in the US previously as with Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs), obtained LPR status, and then returned to Afghanistan. As LPRs they are not eligible for Refugee Resettlement Programs for assistance.

Currently, GUSVA is working to create a document to provide to LPRs that has available point of contacts and resources. As the Afghan Refugees are processed through Dulles, they are then sent to one of the following bases (as of today): Fort Lee, Virginia, Fort Bliss, Texas, Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, and Fort Dix, New Jersey.

We are not sure what the process is for LPRs once they arrive in these location and thus are working to ensure they have someone (i.e. an agency/organization) to assist them with their needs.

Please use the sign up button below if you’d like to help research different organizations near these bases to provide to the LPRs. As the events continue to unfold, we will also have additional opportunities to help.
